Another Reason Not to Go to War So Often

by Charles V. Peña

By now, everyone has either seen or knows about the video of U.S. Marines urinating on the corpses of dead Taliban fighters. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said that “the conduct depicted in the footage is utterly deplorable.” According to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the actions of the Marines in the video are “absolutely inconsistent with American values and the standards we expect from our military personnel.” Not surprisingly, Afghan President Hamid Karzai is none too pleased: “This act by American soldiers is completely inhumane and condemnable in the strongest possible terms.”

(CNN) -- For more than 50 years, the United States has had an embargo against the island of Cuba, all because we supposedly hate communism and believe the nation 90 miles from our borders should institute democracy.

Zionist Master Plan for Global Dictatorship

Before the American Mercury magazine came into its present ownership, it was owned and controlled by a noted patriot by the name of Russell Maguire. He was a man of wealth and intelligent business initiative.
He became alarmed over what he knew to be Zionism’s Master Plan for World Power. A documented research manuscript came into his hands and he had the courage to publish it.

The Real Deal About World Peace

What’s the Real Deal? How do we bring Real Peace to our world? The answer to that question is actually easy. The real question is this: Are you prepared to hear an answer that is so simple, so prolifically accessible to all, so do-able, that it is resting right at your fingertips this very moment?
It’s simple, it is profound, you will immediately feel the resonance of it’s Truth begin to loosen constraints within you. And here it is:

The International Forecaster

In this week’s chat with Bob Chapman of The International Forecaster we discuss the Sarkozy lame-duck financial tax, the German EU takeover ploy, ratings agency pay-for-play and much more.

How the Media Manipulates the World into War James Corbett

As the drums of war begin to beat once again in Iran, Syria, the South China Sea, and other potential hotspots and flashpoints around the globe, concerned citizens are asking how a world so sick of bloodshed and a population so tired of conflict could be led to this spot once again.

Why Ron Paul is Unlikely to Become President Jeff Thomas

There’s an old saying: “Be careful what you wish for — it might come true.”
Many Americans who have lost faith in the American electoral system have turned to an “alternative” presidential candidate, Ron Paul. In fact, many are calling him that last hope for constitutional democracy. He has run for president before, but this time, it’s very different.
On a visit to the US in the spring of 2008, I found that everyone was buzzing with the upcoming November Presidential election. They were speculating on the outcome and what that might mean for their futures.
By 2010, many of those who threw their bonnets over the windmill for Mr. Obama were already dissatisfied that he was turning out to be a mistake in the extreme, and now they were buzzing about the November 2010 election. At that time, the Tea Party had grown to prominence, and many Americans were betting their futures on the outcome of the election and what that might mean for their futures.

The Collapse of the Euro and the EU is Imminent Doug Casey interviewed by Louis James

L: So Doug, a lot of readers are concerned about what’s going on in Europe. Is this the beginning of the proverbial “it?” Or can the Eurozone be saved?
Doug: In brief, the answers are “yes,” then “no” — and a “good riddance” to both the Eurozone and the euro. But most people think the old order should be maintained at almost any cost. That would include George Soros, who recently penned an article called “Does the Euro Have a Future?”

Outrageous! The Government Is Giving Out Free Cell Phones And Free Cell Phone Minutes To Welfare Recipients

Did you know that the federal government is giving out free cell phones and free cell phone minutes to welfare recipients?  It may be hard to believe, but it is true.  Right now, there are companies that are running advertisements specifically targeted at low income Americans informing them of the fact that all they have to do is sign up and they can get a free cell phone and hundreds of free cell phone minutes every single month and it will all be paid for by the federal government.  Some have referred to this as "The Obama Phone", but that is not exactly accurate.  The outrageous federal programs that are paying for this were initiated before Barack Obama entered the White House.  But the fact that welfare recipients have been receiving free cell phones and free cell phone minutes under both the Bush and Obama administrations has been confirmed as being true by Snopes.  All of this is paid for by "the federal Universal Service Fund".  That is one of those annoying little taxes that you may have noticed on your phone bill.  So what is essentially happening is the federal government is taking money from all of us so that they can provide free cell phone service for welfare recipients every single month.

16 Statistics Which Show That The Number Of Americans Dependent On The Government Is At An All-Time High

A higher percentage of the American population is receiving government benefits than ever before.  Yes, there have always been poor people that have needed our assistance, but what does it say about our economy that the number of Americans dependent on the government is at an all-time high?  Every night on the evening news we are told that the economy is improving, and Barack Obama is endlessly giving speeches about the "economic recovery" that is supposedly underway.  But that is not the reality on the ground for those on the bottom rungs of the income ladder in America.  People are really hurting out there, and the number of Americans that are turning to the government for financial assistance just continues to increase.  Yes, we should always have a "safety net", but right now our "safety net" is becoming massively overloaded as millions more Americans jump on to it every single year.  What all of these impoverished Americans really need are jobs, but the U.S. Congress and the past several administrations have been systematically killing job growth in America.  So unfortunately the number of poor Americans is going to continue to rise, and that is really bad news for a nation that is already drowning in debt.

If The Economy Is Improving….

Everywhere you turn these days, someone is proclaiming that the economy is improving.  Barack Obama is endlessly touting the "improvement" in the economy, the mainstream media is constantly talking about "the economic recovery" and an increasing number of Americans seem to be buying into this line of thinking.  A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that 37 percent of Americans believe that the economy will improve over the next year, while only 17 percent of Americans believe that it will get worse.  But is the economy actually improving?  Not really.  At the moment things are relatively stable.  Some economic statistics are improving slightly and some continue to get even worse.  However, it is very important to keep in mind that one of the biggest reasons why things have stabilized is because the federal government is pumping more than a trillion dollars a year into the economy that it does not have.  The Obama administration is engaging in a debt binge unlike anything America has ever seen before, and yet many economic indicators are still in decline.  So what is going to happen when the federal government stops injecting gigantic waves of borrowed money into the economy?  That is a frightening thing to think about.  The best efforts of our "leaders" in Washington D.C. are not accomplishing a whole lot.  The Federal Reserve has pushed interest rates as low as they can go and the federal government is spending unprecedented amounts of money.  But even with the federal government and the Federal Reserve pushing the accelerator all the way to the floor, the economy is still not improving much at all.  Millions upon millions of Americans out there are anticipating some sort of a "great economic recovery", and they are going to be bitterly disappointed.

Chávez Plans to Loot $29B in Venezuelan Reserves

A secret document unveiled this morning by an opposition Venezuelan congressman discloses the extraordinarily risky decision by Venezuela’s ailing dictator Hugo Chávez to transfer all of Venezuela’s $29 billion in gold and cash reserves from Swiss, British, and U.S. banks to accounts in China and Russia. Such an unprecedented move could destroy international confidence in Venezuela, wipe out citizens’ savings, and suffocate an already faltering economy.

AEI Debate Prep: Neutralizing the Iranian threat in Latin America

Iran is using Venezuela as a platform to project its asymmetrical warfare into the Western Hemisphere and to sustain its illicit nuclear program. According to documents of the regime of anti-American radical Hugo Chávez, Iran has laundered about $30 billion through the Venezuelan economy to evade international sanctions.

AEI Debate Prep: Is this the only path to victory in Afghanistan?

What do we need to achieve in Afghanistan in order to protect the security of the United States and its allies?
That core question should shape any discussion of our strategy in Afghanistan or the resources we devote to executing it. But that question is too often obscured.
Many say that pursuing any kind of “success” in Afghanistan, the supposed “graveyard of empires,” is sheer folly. Others say that is has become irrelevant, and that the death of Osama bin Laden has deprived the war in Afghanistan of continued meaning.

AEI Debate Prep: We need a terrorist detention and interrogation policy

The willingness of so many Republican presidential candidates to speak out in defense of waterboarding is encouraging. But the Bush administration only waterboarded three high-value terrorists out of more than 100 held by the CIA. The problem today is not simply that America is no longer waterboarding the Khalid Skeikh Mohammeds of the world; it is that, outside the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq, we are no longer capturing, detaining, and interrogating the Khalid Sheikh Mohammeds of the world at all.

Counterterrorism in America and the Jose Pimentel case

Gary Schmitt
This past Sunday, New York City’s Police Department arrested 27-year-old Jose Pimentel on state charges of plotting a bomb attack. According to the NYPD and the prosecuting Manhattan district attorney, Pimentel maintained a jihadist website, published materials on how to make bombs, tried to reach out to Anwar al-Awlaki (the American-Yemini terrorist leader whom the United States recently killed with a drone strike), talked about killing American marines and soldiers and bombing sites around New York, and was nearing completion of making at least three pipe bombs.

As Michael notes, the Obama administration wants to open peace talks with the Taliban and reward them before they even come to the table by releasing  senior Taliban leaders  held at Guantanamo Bay. Fox News reports that a senior U.S. official has confirmed that “Mullah Mohammed Fazl is among the prisoners being considered for release.”
So who is this Mullah Mohammed Fazl?
Last year, WikiLeaks released a trove of documents it dubbed the “Gitmo Files” with assessments of hundreds of Guantanamo detainees—including Fazl. According to his official record, Fazl is a war criminal who has massacred thousands of people, has close relationships with al Qaeda and other terrorist groups, is involved in narcotics trafficking, and is so senior in the Taliban hierarchy that he once threatened the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Omar. He is considered to pose a “high risk” to American forces and our allies if released.

Mitt Romney and the future of Gitmo

The focus of the media coverage of today’s 10th anniversary of Guantanamo Bay has been largely on President Obama’s failure to close the facility and speculation about how long it will take before the United States finds some way to dispose of the 171 detainees still held there.
But the real question is not what did not happen on January 20, 2010 (the date set by Obama for Gitmo’s closure) but rather what will happen with Guantanamo come January 20, 2013, if a new Republican president takes office.

Al Qaeda terror training manual found at Gitmo

Authorities at Guantanamo Bay recently began reading privileged attorney-client communications in an effort to prevent terrorists from passing messages and receiving unauthorized information from their brethren on the outside. Detainee advocates have responded with outrage, but we may now have learned what sparked the new procedures—an al Qaeda terrorist training manual has been found at Gitmo.

5 questions for … Erik Brynjolfsson, co-author of Race Against the Machine

By James Pethokoukis

Is America suffering from technological stagnation? Is a lack of innovation undermining economic growth and our standard of living? It’s a popular thesis right now, one outlined brilliantly by economist Tyler Cowen in his recent Kindle ebook, The Great Stagnation.
But MIT’s Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee see things quite differently. In their new Kindle ebook, Race Against the Machine: How the Digital Revolution is Accelerating Innovation, Driving Productivity, and Irreversibly Transforming Employment and the Economy, they highlight research that shows there’s been technological acceleration rather than stagnation — computers can now drive cars in traffic, translate effectively between human languages, and beat the best human Jeopardy! players.
But human skills have not kept up. And that’s the problem:

How America can have more Seattles and fewer Detroits

How can American cities be more like vibrant Seattle and less like moribund Detroit? Certainly not by offering them government-backed green jobs programs. Instead, says Ed Glaeser, unleash the entrepreneurs. And here is how:

The 6 killer apps of Western civilization: Part 1: Competition

By Henrik Temp
Check out this great TED talk, in which British historian Niall Ferguson explains his answer to the question of why Western civilization achieved such a clear dominance over the rest of the world.
The presentation is a summary of Ferguson’s book Civilization: The West and the Rest. I highly recommend reading it; it expands on the points from the TED talk and is thoroughly enjoyable. What I’d like to do here is investigate, one at a time, the state of the six “killer apps” in modern America.
Let’s start with Ferguson’s first “killer app”: competition. Here’s a little more background from the book:

Four myths about how World War II (and Keynes) saved the U.S. economy

By James Pethokoukis
In blogger and economist David Henderson’s fascinating review of A Great Leap Forward: 1930s Depression and U.S. Economic Growth by Alexander J. Field, he highlights some interesting findings by the author about the impact of World War II on the U.S economy, particularly as it relates to innovation and productivity. Oh, and whether the orgy of government deficit spending ended the Great Depression:
